EHS legislation

EHS legislation applies to all organisations. Depending on the type of business, industry sector or operations in general, the number of applicable requirements relating to, for example, just chemical storage and use and waste management can amount to hundreds in total. Keeping track of these requirements, their amendments and the level of compliance with these requirements is a formidable and risky undertaking when using merely a spreadsheet.

EHS Compass has been designed as a bespoke tool and service for managing just these tasks. EHS Compass provides you with a tailored list of requirements that apply only to your organisation. It manages all the amendments in the background and notifies you of the changes in content that you need to know about. The service provides you with a continuously updated database of environmental and health and safety information. The requirement of management systems to identify and follow applicable legislation is fulfilled and it is easy to prove to any interested stakeholder.

With the aid of dashboards and a variety of support tools, you can make the management of environmental as well as health and safety issues much more professional. The requirement register allows you to assess the level of compliance, assign tasks to different persons and systematically follow-up on the completion of planned actions. You will be able to see at a glance which areas need more work in order to achieve compliance. When faced with complex questions or challenges, our expert environmental and health and safety consultants / practitioners are available around the globe to provide additional support.

In addition to EHS legislation, we offer additional regional legislation monitoring packages related to, for example, food safety and human resources (HR). Contact Us for more information.

Legal Registers

Legal Registers are useful for clients wishing to have a list of EHS regulations applicable to their operations. The Legal Register is essentially a list of applicable laws and regulations with links to the full text. The Legal Registers can be used to fulfil the requirement in ISO 14001 and 45001 standards to identify and comply with relevant regulatory requirements. It is suitable for those clients who wish to have a regulatory list to work with and are prepared to undertake the more detailed applicability assessment themselves.

The  Legal Register allows the user to:

  • review general applicability as defined in legislation; and
  • include site-specific applicability in a free text field.

The Regulatory Update Reports allows the user to:

  • create a static report on the regulatory changes that have occurred during a selected time period; and
  • be informed of the availability of new update reports in the system.

Requirement Registers

Requirement Registers are useful for clients wishing to have a list of EHS regulations AND their main requirements extracted from the regulations applicable to their operations. The Requirement Register is essentially a tool for following up on the level of EHS compliance on a continuous basis. The Requirement Register can be used to show compliance with the requirement in ISO 14001 and 45001 standards to identify and comply with relevant regulatory requirements. It is suitable for clients who wish to gain a readily identified list of requirements instead of a list of regulations.

The Requirement Register allows you to:

  • stay on top of the detailed everyday management of EHSQ compliance,
  • understand the most important requirements laid out in regulations; and
  • continuously monitor performance and evaluate compliance.

The Requirement Registers:

  • provide access to summaries of the regulations as well as the individual requirements,
  • allow users to assess compliance and assign a responsible person for each requirement,
  • allow users to track the status of each requirement, tag requirements, record notes, add reminders and attachments,
  • perform applicability analysis for each requirement,
  • search and filter requirements by, for example, free text, specific topic area, responsible person or tags; and
  • track daily progress and the current status of the requirement register through dashboards.

The Requirement Update Report allows users to:

  • create a static report on the regulatory changes that have occurred during a selected time period; and
  • be informed of the availability of new update reports in the system.

Corporate and Internal Requirements

In addition to all the regulatory requirements, organisations are also bound to requirements arising from permits, authority inspections, internal policies and procedures and various contracts and agreements made with different stakeholders. Many operators, for example in heavy industry, are faced with hundreds of additional requirements that arise from their environmental and chemicals permits. Managing all these requirements without a purpose-built tool is labour-intensive and increases the possibility of non-compliance.

You can manage all these requirements in EHS Compass, too. To make things fast and efficient, you have the possibility to upload your internal requirements to the database from an Excel- spreadsheet. You also have the possibility to apply the same internal requirements to multiple sites simultaneously. For example, as an administrator of a corporate account, you can manage the content of all your site-specific accounts with one action. This makes the Internal Requirements function in EHS Compass particularly useful when managing a multi-site organisation whether in one country or several.

The Corporate and Internal Requirement Register allows you to:

  • stay on top of the detailed everyday management of compliance,
  • continuously monitor performance and evaluate compliance.

The Corporate and Internal Requirement Registers:

  • import and author requirements and their translations,
  • manage and publish requirements,
  • manage the applicability and distribute the requirements to sub-accounts,
  • provide access to summaries of the requirement sources as well as the individual requirements,
  • allow users to assess compliance and assign a responsible person for each requirement,
  • allow users to track the status of each requirement, tag requirements, record notes, add reminders and attachments,
  • perform applicability analysis for each requirement,
  • search and filter requirements by, for example, free text, specific topic area, responsible person or tags; and
  • track daily progress and the current status of the requirement register through dashboards.

The Corporate and Internal requirements are included in the Requirement Update Report that allows you to:

  • create a static report on the regulatory changes that have occurred during a selected time period; and
  • be informed of the availability of new update reports in the system.
